The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is Canada's fast-track study permit route. When your file is complete and clean, approval can come in as little as 20 calendar days. Here's the exact timeline, checklist and common mistakes that delay Bangladeshi applicants.
1. What is SDS?
SDS is a streamlined study permit processing route for students from specific countries — Bangladesh is on the list. If you meet ALL the requirements, IRCC processes your application in approximately 20 calendar days instead of the 8–16 weeks Non-SDS takes.
2. The Full Timeline — Day by Day
| Phase | Task | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1–2 | Get university offer + Letter of Acceptance | Already done (assume you have this) |
| Week 2–3 | Take IELTS (if not done) — need 6.0 in each band | Results in 3–5 days (computer) |
| Week 3 | Get Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from your university | 1–5 days |
| Week 3–4 | Open GIC account + transfer CAD 20,635 | 3–7 business days |
| Week 4 | Pay first-year tuition in full | 1–3 days (bank transfer) |
| Week 4 | Complete medical exam at approved panel physician in Dhaka | 1 day + 3–5 days for results to upload |
| Week 5 | Submit online application via IRCC portal with all documents | 1–2 hours |
| Week 5 | Biometrics at VFS Dhaka | Same week or next available slot |
| Week 5–8 | IRCC processing — ~20 calendar days | 20 days (can vary) |
| Week 8 | Passport request / approval / visa stamp | 3–7 days |
Total realistic timeline: 6–8 weeks from "I'm starting" to "visa in hand" — if everything goes smoothly.
3. SDS Checklist — Everything You Need
- ✅ Letter of Acceptance from a DLI (Designated Learning Institution)
- ✅ Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) — mandatory since January 2024
- ✅ GIC certificate showing CAD 20,635 deposit
- ✅ First-year tuition paid in full (receipt from university)
- ✅ IELTS Academic with 6.0 in each band (not just overall)
- ✅ Upfront medical exam (panel physician results uploaded to IRCC)
- ✅ Valid passport (at least 6 months validity beyond intended stay)
- ✅ Digital photo meeting IRCC specifications
- ✅ Statement of Purpose
- ✅ Academic transcripts and certificates
4. SDS vs Non-SDS — Quick Comparison
| Factor | SDS | Non-SDS |
|---|---|---|
| Processing | ~20 calendar days | 8–16 weeks |
| IELTS required | 6.0 in each band | Whatever university requires |
| GIC required | Yes — CAD 20,635 | No (show alternative funds) |
| Tuition upfront | Full first year | Not always required |
| Medical upfront | Yes | Sometimes on request |
| Approval rate (BD) | ~75–80% | ~50–60% |
5. Top 5 SDS Mistakes from Bangladesh
- IELTS 6.0 overall but 5.5 in one band. SDS requires 6.0 in EACH band. An overall 6.5 with 5.5 writing = automatic Non-SDS processing.
- Forgetting the PAL. Since January 2024, most programmes need a Provincial Attestation Letter. Without it = automatic refusal.
- GIC amount wrong. It's CAD 20,635, not the old 10,000. Using the old figure = refusal.
- Medical not uploaded before submission. The panel physician must upload results to IRCC's system before you submit. If it's "pending" = processed as Non-SDS.
- Weak Statement of Purpose. Even with SDS, a vague or generic SOP can trigger a refusal on "purpose of visit" grounds.
