CS and IT graduates have the strongest PR prospects of any subject worldwide. All major English-speaking countries have IT on their skilled occupation shortage lists, meaning faster PR processing, bonus points and dedicated visa streams. If you're studying anything in tech — software engineering, data science, AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity — you have outstanding options.
Engineering is one of the most consistently in-demand fields across all study destinations. Civil, mechanical and electrical engineers are on shortage lists in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Construction and project management engineers are highly sought after in the UK due to major infrastructure projects. Germany offers excellent opportunities for mechanical and chemical engineers especially.
Nursing and healthcare is the single fastest route to PR in both Australia and New Zealand. Both countries are facing critical nurse shortages and have created dedicated fast-track PR pathways for healthcare workers. The UK's NHS also actively recruits internationally — but the £38,700 salary threshold can be a hurdle for some roles. Public health, pharmacy, physiotherapy and allied health roles are also highly valued.
Business and management is the most popular subject choice among Bangladeshi students, but PR outcomes vary significantly by country and specialisation. Supply chain, project management, accounting and HR have the strongest PR prospects. A pure MBA may not always appear on shortage lists — so the country and specialisation matter enormously. Canada and UK offer the strongest pathways for business graduates.
Law is unique among subjects because most countries require graduates to requalify under local bar or solicitor standards. A UK LLM has the highest global recognition, particularly for international law, corporate law and human rights. Ireland is excellent for EU-focused legal careers. Australia and New Zealand follow common law (same as UK/Bangladesh) so recognition is easier — but requalification is still needed.
Accounting and finance graduates have strong prospects in multiple countries, particularly because professional qualifications like ACCA, CIMA and CPA are internationally recognised. The UK is the home of ACCA and many global accountancy firms are headquartered in London. Australia has accounting on its skilled shortage list. Canada needs accountants for its growing economy. Finance and actuarial graduates are among the highest earners in the USA.
Media, design and creative arts are among the harder subjects for PR in most countries — these fields rarely appear on shortage occupation lists. However, UX/UI design, digital marketing and content strategy are exceptions and are increasingly in demand. If your goal is PR, consider specialising in the tech-adjacent aspects of your creative field. USA is the creative capital of the world but H-1B is the biggest challenge.
Teachers, social workers, psychologists and environmental scientists are increasingly valued as countries face ageing populations and skills shortages. Australia and New Zealand have put teachers and social workers on shortage lists — creating PR opportunities that many students overlook. Environmental and agricultural science graduates also have strong prospects as countries address climate challenges.
