Canada's study permit refusal rate for Bangladeshi students has been rising. In recent years, approximately 40-50% of applications from Bangladesh have been refused. That's nearly half. But most refusals happen for the same 5 reasons — all of which are avoidable with proper preparation.
The Numbers
According to IRCC data, Bangladesh consistently has one of the higher refusal rates among South Asian countries for study permits. The main refusal code you'll see on your refusal letter is usually one or more of:
- Paragraph 1(a): "I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay"
- Paragraph 1(b): "I am not satisfied that you have enough money to support yourself"
- Purpose of visit: The officer doubts your genuine intention to study
Reason 1: Weak Financial Documentation (Most Common)
This is the #1 killer. IRCC wants to see that you (or your sponsor) can genuinely afford Canadian education — not just that you have money in the bank right now.
Common mistakes:
- Sudden large deposits in the bank account 1-2 months before application — this looks like borrowed money
- Bank balance that just barely meets the minimum — shows no buffer for unexpected expenses
- No clear income source to explain how the sponsor earned the money
- Multiple sponsors without clear documentation of each person's contribution
- FDRs (Fixed Deposit Receipts) opened recently — same problem as sudden deposits
What works:
- 12 months of consistent bank statements showing regular income and gradual savings
- Clear income documentation — salary slips, tax returns, business registration, or property income
- Education loan sanction letter (even if you don't use the full loan — it shows backup)
- GIC of CAD $20,635 (mandatory for SDS, strongly recommended for regular pathway)
- First year tuition paid in full (or at least first semester)
Reason 2: Unconvincing Purpose of Study
Your Statement of Purpose (SOP) is the most important document after financials. The visa officer reads it to understand WHY you're going to Canada and WHY this specific programme.
SOPs that get refused:
- Generic statements like "Canada has world-class education" — every country says this
- No connection between your past education/work and the chosen programme
- No clear career plan after graduation — especially no mention of returning to Bangladesh
- Copy-pasted templates from the internet (IRCC officers have read thousands of these)
SOPs that get approved:
- Specific reasons for choosing Canada, the province, and the institution
- Clear career progression: "I studied X → worked in Y → this programme in Z fills the gap for my goal of W"
- Mention of family ties, property, or career opportunities in Bangladesh (shows return intent)
- Personal, genuine voice — not a template
Reason 3: Programme Doesn't Match Profile
If you have a Bachelor's in English Literature and you're applying for a Diploma in Cybersecurity, the officer will question your motivation. The programme must make logical sense with your academic and professional background.
Red flags:
- Applying for a diploma when you already have a degree (seen as downgrading to get a work permit)
- Switching fields completely without a credible explanation
- Choosing a programme at a college when your qualifications would easily get you into a university
Reason 4: Weak Ties to Bangladesh
The officer needs to believe you'll leave Canada after your studies (or after your PGWP). If you have nothing pulling you back to Bangladesh, they worry you'll overstay.
Strong ties include:
- Family property or business in Bangladesh
- Parents and close family living in Bangladesh
- A job offer or business plan for after graduation
- Previous travel history showing you returned to Bangladesh from other countries
Reason 5: Incomplete or Inconsistent Documents
Missing documents or information that contradicts between documents will get you refused immediately:
- Bank statements that don't match the sponsor's declared income
- Employment letters with incorrect dates or details
- Missing transcripts or certificates
- Inconsistencies between your SOP and your actual background
