You've probably heard that Germany offers free education. It sounds too good to be true — but it's real. Most public universities in Germany charge exactly zero tuition for international students, including Bangladeshis. This article breaks down exactly what "free" means, what you still have to pay, and how to get in.
1. The Truth — What "Free Tuition" Actually Means
In Germany, most public universities are funded by the government. They don't charge tuition fees to anyone — German students, EU students, or international students from Bangladesh. This has been the case since 2014 when almost all German states abolished tuition.
There is one exception: Baden-Württemberg (the state that includes Stuttgart and Heidelberg) charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester (~BDT 1.8 lakh). Every other state — including Bavaria (Munich), Berlin, Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia (Cologne, Düsseldorf) — charges zero.
2. What You DO Pay — The Semester Fee
Every German university charges a small semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) of roughly €150–350 per semester (~BDT 18,000–42,000 per 6 months). This is NOT tuition — it covers:
- Semester transport ticket — free bus, tram and regional train travel for 6 months (worth €200+ on its own)
- Student union (AStA/StuRa) — campus services, cafeteria subsidies
- Administration — enrollment, library, student ID
Compare this to UK (£15,000–30,000/year), Australia (AUD 25,000–45,000/year) or Canada (CAD 20,000–40,000/year) — the German semester fee is essentially pocket money.
3. The Blocked Account — Your Real Cost
Your biggest expense in Germany is the blocked account (Sperrkonto) — a mandatory bank deposit of €11,904 (~BDT 14.3 lakh) that proves you can cover living costs for one year.
- Open the account online with Fintiba, Expatrio or Coracle before your visa appointment
- Transfer €11,904 from Bangladesh
- After arriving in Germany, the bank releases €992/month to you automatically
- This money is yours — it's your living allowance, not a fee
4. Total Real Cost — BDT Breakdown
| Expense | Amount | In BDT (approx) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | €0 | ৳0 |
| Semester fee (per semester) | €150–350 | ৳18,000–42,000 |
| Blocked account (Year 1) | €11,904 | ৳14.3 lakh |
| Health insurance (monthly) | €110–120 | ৳13,200–14,400 |
| Visa fee | €75 | ৳9,000 |
| APS certificate | €150 | ৳18,000 |
| Year 1 total | ~€13,800 | ~৳16.5 lakh |
Compare this to the UK where Year 1 costs BDT 35–50 lakh, or Australia at BDT 30–45 lakh. Germany is genuinely 3–4× cheaper than any English-speaking destination.
5. But I Don't Speak German — Can I Still Go?
Yes. Germany offers over 2,000 Master's programmes taught entirely in English. You don't need a single word of German for admission. Popular English-taught fields include:
- Computer Science, Data Science, AI
- Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering
- Business Administration, Economics
- Environmental Science, Renewable Energy
For Bachelor's programmes, most are in German (requiring TestDaF C1). Bangladeshi HSC students typically need a 1-year Studienkolleg (foundation year in German) before entering a German-taught Bachelor's.
