Study in Germany for 0 BDT Tuition — How It Really Works

📅 May 2026 ⏱️ 6 min read ✍️ Teesta Tech Counsellors

You've probably heard that Germany offers free education. It sounds too good to be true — but it's real. Most public universities in Germany charge exactly zero tuition for international students, including Bangladeshis. This article breaks down exactly what "free" means, what you still have to pay, and how to get in.

1. The Truth — What "Free Tuition" Actually Means

In Germany, most public universities are funded by the government. They don't charge tuition fees to anyone — German students, EU students, or international students from Bangladesh. This has been the case since 2014 when almost all German states abolished tuition.

There is one exception: Baden-Württemberg (the state that includes Stuttgart and Heidelberg) charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester (~BDT 1.8 lakh). Every other state — including Bavaria (Munich), Berlin, Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia (Cologne, Düsseldorf) — charges zero.

📌 Bottom line: If you study at a public university in any German state except Baden-Württemberg, your tuition is genuinely BDT 0. Not reduced, not discounted — zero.

2. What You DO Pay — The Semester Fee

Every German university charges a small semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) of roughly €150–350 per semester (~BDT 18,000–42,000 per 6 months). This is NOT tuition — it covers:

Compare this to UK (£15,000–30,000/year), Australia (AUD 25,000–45,000/year) or Canada (CAD 20,000–40,000/year) — the German semester fee is essentially pocket money.

3. The Blocked Account — Your Real Cost

Your biggest expense in Germany is the blocked account (Sperrkonto) — a mandatory bank deposit of €11,904 (~BDT 14.3 lakh) that proves you can cover living costs for one year.

⚠️ The blocked account amount increases periodically. Always check the current figure on the German Embassy Dhaka website before transferring.

4. Total Real Cost — BDT Breakdown

ExpenseAmountIn BDT (approx)
Tuition€0৳0
Semester fee (per semester)€150–350৳18,000–42,000
Blocked account (Year 1)€11,904৳14.3 lakh
Health insurance (monthly)€110–120৳13,200–14,400
Visa fee€75৳9,000
APS certificate€150৳18,000
Year 1 total~€13,800~৳16.5 lakh

Compare this to the UK where Year 1 costs BDT 35–50 lakh, or Australia at BDT 30–45 lakh. Germany is genuinely 3–4× cheaper than any English-speaking destination.

5. But I Don't Speak German — Can I Still Go?

Yes. Germany offers over 2,000 Master's programmes taught entirely in English. You don't need a single word of German for admission. Popular English-taught fields include:

For Bachelor's programmes, most are in German (requiring TestDaF C1). Bangladeshi HSC students typically need a 1-year Studienkolleg (foundation year in German) before entering a German-taught Bachelor's.

💡 Our advice: Even if your course is in English, learning basic German (A2–B1) before you go will dramatically improve your part-time job prospects, daily life and long-term career in Germany.

6. How to Apply from Bangladesh — Quick Steps

7. FAQ

Is it really free or is there a catch?
No catch. Public universities in all German states except Baden-Württemberg charge zero tuition. You pay a small semester fee (€150–350) and your living costs. The blocked account money (€11,904) is your own money released back to you monthly.
How much total BDT do I need?
Roughly BDT 16–17 lakh for Year 1 including blocked account, semester fee, visa, APS and insurance. Year 2 onwards is only the blocked account renewal (~BDT 14 lakh) since most other fees are one-time.
Can I work while studying in Germany?
Yes — 120 full days or 240 half days per year. At Germany's minimum wage of €12.82/hour, part-time work covers most of your living costs.
Do I need German language for a Master's?
Not for English-taught programmes — and there are 2,000+ of them. You'll need IELTS 6.0–6.5 typically. For German-taught programmes, you need TestDaF C1 level.
Is there PR after studying in Germany?
Yes — Germany offers an 18-month job seeker visa after graduation, then an EU Blue Card leading to permanent residence in as little as 21 months. It's the fastest PR timeline of any major study destination.
