New Zealand has one of the highest student visa approval rates for Bangladeshi applicants — over 90% for genuine students with complete documentation. Whether you're applying to the University of Auckland, Victoria University of Wellington, or AUT, the visa process is the same. This guide walks you through every step.
1. What You're Applying For
You're applying for a Fee Paying Student Visa through Immigration New Zealand (INZ). This allows you to study full-time at any NZQA-approved institution — including all 8 NZ universities: University of Auckland, University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Canterbury, University of Waikato, Massey University, Lincoln University, and Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
Key rights on this visa: study full-time, work 20 hours/week during term and unlimited during holidays, and apply for a Post-Study Work Visa after graduation.
2. Before You Apply
Get your offer of place. Apply to your chosen university — whether that's the University of Canterbury for engineering, Massey University for agriculture and business, or University of Otago for health sciences. Once accepted, pay the required tuition deposit (usually NZD $5,000-10,000).
Take your English test. Most NZ universities require IELTS 6.0 overall. Victoria University of Wellington and University of Waikato accept PTE Academic as well. Some accept MOI letters from English-medium Bangladeshi institutions.
Get your medical done. You need an examination from an INZ-approved panel physician in Dhaka — this must be done BEFORE submitting your visa. Cost: approximately BDT 15,000-20,000. Results upload directly to INZ's eMedical system.
3. Documents Needed
Academic Documents
- SSC and HSC certificates and marksheets (attested)
- Bachelor's degree certificate and transcripts (for postgraduate applicants)
- IELTS/PTE/TOEFL score report
- Offer of place from your NZ institution
- Tuition fee receipt
Financial Documents
- Show money: NZD $20,000/year (~BDT 15 lakh) for living — bank statements showing this balance for 3-6 months
- Sponsor's income proof: salary slips, tax returns, business documents
- Sponsorship letter stating relationship, amount, and commitment
- Education loan sanction letter (if applicable)
Personal Documents
- Valid passport (15+ months validity)
- Police clearance from Bangladesh
- Medical examination results (via eMedical)
- 2 passport photos
4. The 7 Steps
Step 1: Create an account on immigration.govt.nz and select "Student Visa."
Step 2: Fill the online form — personal details, travel history, health and character declarations.
Step 3: Upload all documents as clear PDFs. Label each file clearly.
Step 4: Pay NZD $375 (~BDT 28,000) by credit/debit card.
Step 5: Provide biometrics at VFS Global centre in Dhaka.
Step 6: Wait for processing (4-6 weeks). INZ may request additional documents.
Step 7: Receive your eVisa approval via email.
5. Total Visa Costs
| Item | NZD | BDT (approx) |
|---|---|---|
| Visa fee | $375 | 28,000 |
| Medical | — | 15,000-20,000 |
| Police clearance | — | 500-1,000 |
| VFS biometrics | ~$50 | 3,500 |
| Total | ~$425 | ~BDT 50,000 |
Compare: Australia visa costs BDT 1.2 lakh, UK costs BDT 2 lakh+. NZ is significantly cheaper.
6. Processing Time
Standard: 4-6 weeks. Peak season (June-August): 6-8 weeks. Apply at least 3 months before your programme starts. Complete your medical BEFORE applying — INZ won't process until it's in the system.
7. Common Mistakes
- Sudden deposits: BDT 15 lakh appearing 2 weeks before applying looks like borrowed money. Build balance over 6 months
- Medical done late: NZ requires medical BEFORE application — unlike UK or Canada
- Wrong institution: Verify your programme is NZQA-approved. All 8 universities (Auckland, Otago, Wellington, Canterbury, Waikato, Massey, Lincoln, AUT) are approved, but check private providers carefully
- Hiding visa refusals: If Canada or UK refused you, declare it. INZ checks and penalises non-disclosure more than the refusal itself
- Expired IELTS: Valid for 2 years only. If your score is from 2023, retake before applying
8. FAQ
Do I need an interview?
No. Unlike the US F1 visa, NZ student visa decisions are entirely document-based. No embassy interview required.
Can my spouse apply too?
Your spouse applies separately for a Partner of a Student Work Visa. If you're studying a Level 7+ programme of 12+ months at any of the 8 NZ universities, your spouse qualifies for a full open work visa.
What's the approval rate?
Over 90% for genuine Bangladeshi applicants with complete documentation. Much higher than Canada's 50-60%.

9. Teesta Tech NZ Visa Support — What We Do
Our Chattogram-based counsellors have helped hundreds of Bangladeshi students successfully apply to all 8 NZ universities. Here's exactly what we provide — 100% free:
University selection: We match your academic background, budget, and PR goals to the right NZ university. If you want the cheapest option, we recommend Lincoln University or University of Waikato. If you want the strongest engineering programme, we recommend University of Canterbury. If you want maximum career options in a big city, we guide you to the University of Auckland or AUT.
Application submission: As authorised university representatives, we submit your application through partner portals — often with application fee waivers and faster processing than direct applications.
Financial planning: We review your family's financial situation and advise on exactly how much show money you need, how to present bank statements, and whether an education loan strengthens your application.
Document review: Before you submit to INZ, we review every document — checking for consistency, completeness, and the common mistakes that cause BD applicants to fall into the 10% refusal category.
Visa application support: We guide you through the online INZ application form, document upload, biometrics booking at VFS Dhaka, and medical appointment scheduling.
Post-visa support: Pre-departure briefing, accommodation advice, airport procedures, and connecting you with BD students already in NZ.
Walk into our Chattogram office (Moti Tower, 4th Floor, Chawkbazar) or WhatsApp us at +8801904116980. Saturday to Thursday, 9:30am-5:30pm. No appointment needed.
What Happens After Your Visa Is Approved
You've got the approval email. Now what? Here's the checklist for BD students before flying to NZ:
Before you leave Bangladesh
- Book flights: Dhaka → Auckland/Christchurch/Wellington. Direct flights aren't available — you'll connect via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Bangkok. Budget NZD $1,500-2,500 for a return ticket. Book 4-6 weeks before departure for best prices
- Arrange first-week accommodation: Book a hostel, Airbnb, or university hall for your first 1-2 weeks while you search for permanent housing. Most NZ universities offer temporary accommodation for new international students — contact your international office
- Currency: Bring NZD $500-1,000 in cash for immediate expenses (airport taxi, first meals, SIM card). You can exchange at Sonali Bank, Pubali Bank, or private forex dealers in Motijheel, Dhaka
- Documents to carry (printed): Visa approval letter, passport, offer of place, tuition receipt, accommodation booking, insurance certificate, medical clearance, and BDT $50,000+ in NZD traveller's cheques or debit card
- Pack warm clothes: Even if you're arriving in NZ summer (December-February), bring a light jacket. NZ weather changes quickly. If arriving in July (winter), bring proper winter gear — buy additional warm clothes at Kmart or The Warehouse after arrival (much cheaper than buying in BD)
First week in NZ
- Day 1-2: Arrive, check into accommodation, buy a SIM card (Spark, Vodafone, or Skinny — available at the airport)
- Day 3: Open a bank account (ANZ, ASB, BNZ, or Westpac — visit any branch with your passport and student ID). You'll need this for work and rent payments
- Day 4: Apply for an IRD number (tax number) online at ird.govt.nz — you need this before you can start working
- Day 5-7: Attend university orientation week. Register for courses, get your student ID, meet your faculty, join student clubs
- Week 2: Start flat-hunting. Check Trade Me Property, Facebook Flatmates groups, and university accommodation boards. Inspect flats in person — don't pay deposits sight unseen
Getting your IRD number — critical for work
You cannot legally work in NZ without an IRD (Inland Revenue Department) number. Apply online within your first week. You'll need your NZ bank account number to complete the application. Processing takes 5-10 working days. Many BD students make the mistake of delaying this — don't. The sooner you have your IRD, the sooner you can start part-time work.
