IELTS is the single biggest barrier for Bangladeshi students who want to study abroad. But here's what agents won't tell you: IELTS is not the only option, and some countries don't require it at all. This guide covers every realistic "no IELTS" pathway across 7 countries.
1. The Honest Truth First
"Without IELTS" does NOT mean "without proving English." Every country requires proof of English ability for a student visa. The question is HOW you prove it:
- IELTS — the traditional route, accepted everywhere
- MOI letter — proof your previous degree was taught in English
- Duolingo English Test — cheaper, faster, taken from home
- PTE Academic — computer-based, AI-scored, fast results
- University's own English test — some universities test you themselves
2. MOI Letter — The Most Common Alternative
A Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter confirms your previous degree/diploma was taught entirely in English. If your Bangladeshi university issues one, many foreign universities waive the IELTS requirement.
Countries that accept MOI letters
| Country | MOI Accepted? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 🇬🇧 UK | ✅ Many universities | Not all — check each university. UKVI may still need SELT for visa. |
| 🇨🇦 Canada | ✅ Some universities | Not accepted for SDS — only Non-SDS route |
| 🇦🇺 Australia | ✅ Some universities | University decision, not immigration |
| 🇮🇪 Ireland | ✅ Some universities | Particularly conversion Master's programmes |
| 🇳🇿 New Zealand | ✅ Limited | Fewer universities accept it |
| 🇩🇪 Germany | ✅ For English-taught programmes | German-taught still needs TestDaF |
| 🇺🇸 USA | ⚠️ Rarely | Most US universities want TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo |
3. Duolingo English Test — The Game Changer
Duolingo costs ~৳6,000 (vs ৳22,500 for IELTS), takes 1 hour from home, and results come in 2 days. Accepted by 500+ universities in the US, 200+ in Canada, and growing numbers in UK and Australia.
Where Duolingo is accepted
- 🇺🇸 USA: Widely accepted — the strongest Duolingo market
- 🇨🇦 Canada: Growing acceptance, but NOT for SDS (SDS needs IELTS/PTE)
- 🇬🇧 UK: Some universities accept for admission (not for UKVI visa stage)
- 🇦🇺 Australia: Limited but increasing
- 🇮🇪 Ireland: Some universities accept
4. 🇬🇧 UK — Without IELTS
- MOI letter: Accepted by many universities for admission
- University's own test: Some universities offer internal English assessments
- Pre-sessional English: Start with lower English, complete a 4–12 week course, then join your degree
- Visa note: For the Student Route visa, UKVI usually accepts the university's assessment. But if you're applying without a CAS, you'll need IELTS for UKVI.
5. 🇨🇦 Canada — Without IELTS
- Duolingo: Accepted by many Canadian universities for admission
- PTE Academic: Accepted for both admission AND SDS since August 2023
- MOI letter: Some universities accept — but only for Non-SDS applications
- Important: SDS requires either IELTS (6.0 each band) or PTE equivalent. No MOI or Duolingo for SDS.
6. 🇦🇺 Australia — Without IELTS
- PTE Academic: Widely accepted and increasingly popular — same status as IELTS
- TOEFL iBT: Accepted by most Australian universities
- MOI letter: Some universities accept for admission
- Cambridge English: Accepted by some universities
7. 🇩🇪 Germany — Without IELTS
- For English-taught Master's: Many accept TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge or even MOI
- For German-taught programmes: IELTS is irrelevant — you need TestDaF or DSH instead
- Some universities accept Duolingo for admission to English-taught programmes
