"Fully funded MS in America" — you've seen it everywhere on Facebook. But what does it actually mean? Is it real? Can a Bangladeshi student with a normal background actually get it? This guide separates the hype from reality.
1. The Reality Check
Yes, fully funded Master's degrees in the USA exist. But "fully funded" in the US means something specific:
- Tuition waiver — the university doesn't charge you tuition
- Monthly stipend — typically USD 1,500–2,500/month for living costs
- Health insurance — usually included
- In exchange for: working as a Research Assistant (RA) or Teaching Assistant (TA) — typically 20 hours/week
2. Types of Funding
| Type | What You Get | What You Do | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research Assistantship (RA) | Tuition + $1,800–2,500/month | Work on professor's research project | STEM fields mainly |
| Teaching Assistantship (TA) | Tuition + $1,500–2,200/month | Teach labs, grade papers, hold office hours | Most departments |
| Fellowship | Tuition + $2,000–3,000/month | No work required — pure merit award | Very competitive |
| Tuition waiver only | Tuition covered, no stipend | Nothing required | Common for strong applicants |
| Partial scholarship | 10–50% tuition reduction | Nothing required | Wide availability |
3. RA and TA — The Most Common Path
For Bangladeshi students, the most realistic "fully funded" route is an RA or TA position. Here's how it works:
- You email professors in your field of interest before applying
- A professor with research funding agrees to take you on as their RA
- The university covers your tuition and pays you a monthly stipend
- You work 20 hours/week on their research while completing your coursework
Which fields get funded most easily?
- High funding: Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Data Science
- Medium funding: Economics, Statistics, Environmental Science, Mathematics
- Low funding: MBA, Law, Social Sciences, Humanities, Public Health (some exceptions)

6. How to Find Funded Positions from Bangladesh
- Start 12–18 months before your intended start. Fall 2027 applications open in September 2026.
- Research professors. Read their recent papers. Find professors whose research matches your interests.
- Email professors directly. Introduce yourself, mention their specific research, ask about RA positions. Send 30–50 emails — expect 5–10 replies.
- Apply broadly. 8–15 universities is standard. Mix: 3 reach, 5 match, 3–5 safe.
- GRE matters. 315+ total (160Q+) significantly increases your funding chances in STEM.
- Strong SOP. Your statement of purpose should clearly connect your Bangladesh experience to the professor's research.
